home > teaching Teaching Play always as if a master were listening ... Schumann Jillian believes that from an early age, children must be exposed to rhythm, ear drills, keyboard, and note reading. One thing she is relentless about, playing right notes is just not good enough - they may as well play the typewriter! The colours, the slurring, staccato, rhythm; it all provides the atmosphere and colours of the pieces, or what you might know as musicianship. Keeping a balance of inspiring the children at primary level and keeping them on the road to discover new pieces requires quite a juggling act, hence a 6 week plan, broken down into two weeks of three week blocks:
As every child learns at a different pace there is flexibility and spontaneity with each lesson and of course the six week plan. Each child learns privately as well as coming together at various stages thoughout the year to perform both solo works and group piano major works using all facets of their musicianship. |
